Meizhou has a long history. Meizhou was the residence of Hakka people after they moved from Central China to this region in Qin (221BC-206 BC) and Han dynasties (206BC-220AD). It was in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) that prefecture named Meizhou was established for great many plum trees planted here.
The terrain of the city slopes downward from the north to the south. Within its territory, hilly area and terraces occupy the majority of the land, and then mountainous area ranks the second place. Plain region in Meizhou is small in area.
Enjoying a subtropical monsoon climate, its hottest and coldest days usually appear in July and January. Weather in summer is hot and the temperature in summer and winter varies greatly. The rainfall mainly concentrates on the period from April to September.

Reputed as one of the four famous temples in Guangdong Province, Lingguang Temple has been stood there for more than 1,200 years since it first built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Another one is Lianfang Tower (Huaqiao Weiwu). Weiwu is a kind of vernacular dwelling of the Hakkas inhabited by the whole clan. This building was built by oversea Chinese in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The inner part was constructed according to the structure of traditional besieged tower, Weiwu, but the outer wall was designed to be the western style. Meizhou Festivals

The Spring Festival is the Chinese people’s most important festival.  It is a time when all family members get together, much like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home return, thus this month and a half period is the busiest time for transportation systems. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.

The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, generally one month later than the Gregorian calendar’s New Year.  It finds its origins in the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BCE - c. 1100 BCE) when people would offer sacrifices to the gods and to their ancestors to mark the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.According to lunar calendar, Winter Solstice is an important solar term, as well as a traditional festival. It is still celebrated nowadays in many places in China. Winter Solstice is also called Winter Festival, Long Solstice Festival, Ya Sui, etc. Early in Spring and Autumn Period over 2,500 years ago, Chinese people had observed the Winter Solstice with a sundial. It is the earliest of the twenty-four seasonal division points. Winter Solstice falls on the twenty-second or the twenty-third of the twelfth lunar month every year. The Northern hemisphere on this day experiences the shortest daytime and longest nighttime. After this day, daytime will become longer and longer. There are many ancient sayings about the Winter Solstice, such as “Ying comes to its extreme and Yang starts to grow”; “the sun has come to the southeast”; “daytime at its shortest length and nighttime at its longest length”, etc. This is why the Solstice is also called Dong Zhi, meaning midwinter. After the Winter Solstice, the coldest temperature comes to everywhere, so-called Jing Jiu (entering nines). As the saying goes, “the cold falls on the third nine-day period in winter, and the hot falls on the third ten-day period in summer
