Jiangsu Introduction

Also called Su for short, Jiangsu Province is situated in China's southeast coast, on the lower reaches of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River where the Changjiang River, the Grand Canal, Taihu Lake, and Hongze Lake join forces to form the Changjiang River Delta, a wellknown network of waterways in China. The province has an area of more than 100,000 square kilometers, most of which being plains, and a population of about 70 million. one of the densely populated provinces in China, it is inhabited by the Han, Hui, Man, and other ethnic groups. Nanjing is the provincial capital.
Jiangsu has a long history. It was part of State Wu and State Yue during the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods (770 -221 B. C.). It belonged to Xuzhou and Yangzou at Han times (206 B. C.-  A. D. 220) and to Henan and Zhejiang provinces in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), it was under the jurisdiction of Nanjing. Jiangsu was made a province during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It is divided into northern and southern Jiangsu by the Changjiang. The province has a mild climate and a well developed economy, and it is a "land of plenty," producing rice, wheat, cotton, silk, and fish.
There are many places of historic interest in Jiangsu, including 41 under State protection, and scenic attractions, including four national and seven provincial scenic areas. Of the tourist cities, Nanjing is known for the historical sites of six feudal dynasties; Suzhou, for the classical gardens; Wuxi, for the landscape of Taihu Lake; Yangzhou, for the culture of the Han and Tang dynasties; Zhenjiang for the mountains and temples; Changzhou, for the sites of ancient towns; Yixing, for its pottery, caves, bamboo groves, and tea; Xuzhou, for the culture of the Qin and Han regimes; Lianyungang, for the sight of the Yellow Sea; Nantong, for its scenery of the rivers and sea; Changshu, for temples in the famous mountains; and Huai'an, for the sites of noted personages.

Jiangsu Traffic

There are seven civil aviation airports throughout the whole province, namely, Nanjing Lukou International Airprot, Changzhou Benniu Airport, Wuxi Shuofang Airport, Nantong Xingdong Airport, Yancheng Nanyang Airport, Liangyungang Baitafu Airport, Xuzhou Guanyin Airport. Nanjing Lukou International Airport has flights to and from various cities in the world.
The main railways that extend through Jiangsu Province are Jinghu (Beijing-Shanghai)
Railway, Longhai Railway, Ningtong Railway, Ningqi Railway and Xinchang Railway. Among the 13 provincial cities, the downtown areas of these cities all have railways except for Suqian. Nanjing and Xuzhou are the pivot of railway communication in the northern part of Jiangsu and the southern part of it respectively.
By the end of 2005, Jiangsu has built 11 freeways that extend to other provinces. At the present, the network of both built freeways and freeways under construction in the province has the overall arrangement of “four lines from north to south, four from west to east, and four linking through”. The mileage of the freeways in Jiangsu ranks the third in the whole country, and the density of traffic comes the first in China. All provincial cities and over 80% of towns have freeways passing through them. The bus passenger transport in the provincial cities, especially that of the cities in southern Jiangsu, has mostly be very fast. It is a comparatively good choice to travel by high-speed buses. Except for those freeways, there are National Highway 104, 205, 310, 312, 328 and so on that run through Jiangsu. These highways are good in quality.
Sea Transport
The main passenger transportation in Jiangsu is waterway transport. There are regular ships from Suzhou and Wuxi to Hangzhou that depart at sunset and arrive at sunrise. In addition, along the Yangtze River, Nanjing sometimes has yachts to Chongqing.
Bridge Transport
There are six large bridges across the Yangtze River, namely, The Yangtze River Bridge No. 1 in Nanjing, The Yangtze River Bridge No. 2 in Nanjing, The Yangtze River Bridge No. 3 in Nanjing, The Yangtze River Bridge in Jiangyin, and The Yangtze River Bridge in Runyang (from Zhenjiang to Yangzhou). Among them, The Yangtze River Bridge No. 1 in Nanjing is a city bridge used for both bus and train transport, and people can also go through the bridge on foot or by bike. The other five bridges are specialized as freeway, so only buses can go through them. What’s more, there are some bridges currently under construction or are about to be built, among which The Yangtze River Bridge in Sutong (from Suzhou to Nantong) is under construction, and Chongqi Bridge (from Chongming Island in Shanghai to Qidong) and The Yangtze River No. 4 in Nanjing. All of the three are specialized as freeways. Furthermore, a highway tunnel across the Yangtze River in Nanjing is being conceived.
At the present, ferry routes on the Yangtze River, such as Tongsha (from Nantong to Zhangjiagang), Tongchang (from Nantong to Changshu), Taihai (from Taicang to Haimen) still undertake transportation between southern and northern China.
