Hangzhou Introduction

Hangzhou is one of the important tourism cities in China, famous for its natural beauty and historical and cultural heritages. Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province. It is the political, economic and cultural center of the province as well. It is one of the 15 vice-provincial level cities in China.

Hangzhou is located on the low reaches of Qiantang River in southeast China, with a distance of 180 kilometers to Shanghai. It is one of the key cities in the Yangzi Delta area.

Hangzhou is of subtropical monsoon climate, with distinctive four seasons and mild atmosphere and favorable geographical positions and natural conditions. Hangzhou has 6 districts, 2 counties and 5 county-level municipalities under its jurisdiction. Hangzhou covers a total area of 16596 square kilometers, with a population of 6.08 million, including 683 square kilometers of city proper area and city population of 1.69 million people.

Hangzhou is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. The human being had lived and prospered in this land 4700 years ago, which is called "Liangzhu Culture". Hangzhou had once been the capitals of Wu and Yue kingdoms of Five Dynasties during the 10th Century and capital of Southern Song Dynasty during the 12-13th Century. It is one of the seven ancient Chinese capitals, famous for its historical and cultural heritages. The city has a history of more than 2200 years since it was established as a county by the First Emperor Qing.

Hangzhou Traffic

By plane

Hangzhou is serviced by the Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, which has direct flights to Japan, Thailand, Korea, and Singapore, regional routes to Hong Kong and Macau, as well as numerous domestic routes. Located just outside of the city in the Xiaoshan district, it is one of the major secondary international airports in China. A convenient route to Hangzhou for foreign visitors is to first fly into Shanghai's Pudong airport, and then take bus to Hangzhou using the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway. Driving time from the airport to Shanghai is about 2.5 hrs (about 85 RMB one way), Suzhou is about 1.5 hrs, Wuxi is about 2 hrs, Ningbo is about 1.5 hrs and Wenzhou is about 3.5 hrs.

Airport buses leave for Wulin Men (downtown Hangzhou) (15 RMB one way) and Xiaoshan (also 15 RMB one way) every 15-30 minutes. There are also airport buses to prefectures further away near Hangzhou such as Yiwu (30 RMB one way).

By train

Hangzhou Railway Station and the significantly less modern Hangzhou East Railway Station serve the city centre, from which one can catch a train to Shanghai and almost anywhere in China. There are many trains going to or passing Hangzhou from Shanghai. It normally takes about 2 hours from Shanghai (200 km) to Hangzhou by train (Cost is about 40 RMB).

Trains leaving Hangzhou reach more than 20 cities directly, including Beijing (1650 km), Shanghai (200 km), and Xi'an (1550 km).

Train tickets can be purchased at the Wulinmen Ticket Office (No. 199, Wulin Road) or Huansha Road Ticket Office (No. 147, Huansha Road).

A Shanghai-Hangzhou Maglev Train Line has been proposed. North, east, south and west long-distance bus stations offer regular large and small coach services to towns within Zhejiang province and surrounding provinces.

Transrapid has now been contracted to construct an extension of the existing Long Yang Road - Pudong International Airport Maglev line. This would be the first inter-city maglev line in the world; it is now undergoing environmental assessment.

Urban traffic

Public transport within Hangzhou city is primarily in the form of an extensive public (trolley) bus network. As the city area is so flat, bicycles were traditionally very popular and are still popular with the less well-off residents, though many now use electric bicycles and scooter (Motor cycle)s.

Taxis are also very common. With its line of the newest Hyundai Elantras and Volkswagen Passats, and tight regulations (compulsory A/C, handicap service, lake-blue appearance etc.), the city's taxi service is rated amongst the top in the country. The basic charge is 10 yuan for the first 4 kms, and then 2 yuan per km for the exceding. The construction of a subway system had long been planned, and recently received approval from the central government. The completion of the first two lines is expected in 2010

Hangzhou Festivals

China International Qiantang River Tide Watching Festival
The Qiantang Tide is a world wonder, famous for its great momentum and majestic spectacle. The custom of Qiantang tide watching began in the Dynasties of Han and Wei, with a history of more than 2,000 years. In the 15th day of the eighth lunar month every year, hundreds of thousands of visitors would swarm to the banks of the Qiantang River to watch this world wonder-the Qiantang Tide. Yanguan at Haining is the best site for the tide watching. Many people make three viewing of the same tide: watching the "head-on tide" at the Ding Bridge, the "Thread Tide" at Yanguan, and the "Returning Tide" at the Old Yancang. In fact, the Qiantang River has tide everyday, though in the first and the 15th day of the lunar month, when the sun, the moon and the earth lie almost in a straight line, there will be the greatest tides, and thus the time for tide watching in a year is only a little more than 20 days.
First held in 1994, the China International Qiantang River Tide-Watching Festival has since been held every year, with its main site at the Yanguan Town of the Haining City. The main content of the festival includes a large scale folk dance of Fete to the Tide Deity at the opening ceremony, which consists of performances of Navy Practice, Young Fisher's Tide Surfing, Hard Crossbow Tide Shooting, Respect Paying Ceremony to Tide and the Merry Celebration. The dance displays fully the folk customs of people at both banks of the Qiantang River in tide playing, tide fighting, and tide ceremony. There are also the temple fair in the Haishen Temple, with dragon dance and lion dance, the folk song of Lotus Falling, folk shadow play, Beijing Opera performed by acrobatic teams, folk Huagu Opera, folk play of Dalianxiang, folk vaudeville of Broadsword Dance, and so on. During the festival, the city of Haining will also hold the Xiashi light contest with traditional local features, adding a festival atmosphere to the period.
A sub-site is at the Tide-Watching city of the Xiaoshan City, with a one-hour large-scale water-borne performance as its main program at the intervals of the Qiantang tide, including parachute jumps with motorboats, water-skating with motorboats, and water-borne motorcycles.

West Lake Sweet Osmanthus Festival
Sweet Osmanthus is the city flower of Hangzhou, which, together with Xianning, Suzhou, Guilin, Hefei, has become one of the five sweet osmanthus producing areas. The "Man Long Rain of Sweet Osmanthus" is the main scene of the Sweet Osmanthus Festival. Here more than 7,000 sweet osmanthus grow along the road. During the festival more than 200 colorful awnings tidily extend along the two sides of the road while people appreciate sweet osmanthus over their cups of tea, playing cards or chess in awnings or by trees, enjoying themselves.
The West Lake Sweet Osmanthus Festival combined the "Sweet Osmanthus Culture" with the "Tea Culture". For its opening ceremony there are large-scale comprehensive art shows and the Dragon's Well green tea ceremony, along with a symposium of the Late Sweet Osmanthus by Yu Dafu, and a party in memory of Premier Zhou Enlai. To make the festival more accessible to visitors, there are tea ceremonies of the 6 major teas in the country, ikebana performance, and storytelling of "Hangzhou's People and Hangzhou's Events", bridge, weiqi, chess arena, mini golf, and children’s games at the Manjue Mount.
